Christmas cards, humble though they seem, are tiny carriers of connection. They remind us that in the hustle and bustle of life, someone paused and thought:\u00a0<em>You matter to me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But how did this tradition begin? And why does it still hold meaning in an age of instant messages and glowing screens?<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Victorian Beginning<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Christmas card, as we know it, traces back to Victorian England. In 1843, Sir Henry Cole, a well-respected civil servant and cultural innovator, found himself in a holiday dilemma familiar even now: too many friends, too little time. Sending handwritten letters to each person was becoming impossible. So, he approached illustrator John Callcott Horsley and asked him to create a printed greeting that he could sign and send instead.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result was the first commercial Christmas card: a triptych-style image of a family gathered around a festive table, flanked by scenes of charity to the poor. Printed in batches and sold for a shilling each, they were not immediately a mass-market hit.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the 1860s, printers and artists began producing cards on a larger scale. The Victorians adored sentiment, and the idea of sending illustrated greetings fit beautifully into their blossoming postal culture. Soon, Christmas cards became a cherished seasonal custom across Britain, and thanks to the settling of postage rates and the spread of railways, the tradition travelled quickly across oceans.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Golden Age of Paper Greeting<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the late 19th and early 20th century, Christmas cards became miniature works of art. Embossed flowers, wintry landscapes, gold leaf, cheeky robins, candlelit cottages, idyllic scenes of the Christmas ideal. Children would clip them into scrapbooks. Telephones, computers and mobile phones shrank distances and sped up communications. With the increasing lack of free time and the accessibility to instant messaging improved, Christmas cards declined, and it looked like the tradition was fading away\u2026<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But something unexpected happened.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the last decade, there has been a quiet return to the handmade and the heartfelt. Crafting with our hands, writing with our own handwriting, choosing slowness over speed. People realised that digital convenience, while practical, does not always nourish the spirit. And so, Christmas cards are finding their way back, not always in stacks of dozens, but in careful handfuls sent with care. Quality over quantity. Meaning over habit.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Tradition Worth Keeping<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the magic of the Christmas card is that it is unhurried.
